Why Highways Feel Scary

Higher speeds and multiple lanes can feel overwhelming, but highways are actually safer per mile than city streets. Here's how to approach them with confidence.

Mastering the Merge

  1. Use the on-ramp to match highway speed
  2. Check mirrors and blind spots
  3. Find your gap—don't hesitate
  4. Merge smoothly, maintaining speed
  5. Move to the middle lanes when safe

Safe Lane Changes

  • Signal first, then check mirrors and blind spot
  • Make sure you have 4+ car lengths of space
  • Change lanes gradually, not abruptly
  • One lane at a time

Following Distance

Use the 3-second rule: pick a fixed point and count how long it takes you to reach it after the car ahead passes. Increase to 4-5 seconds in bad weather.

Exiting Safely

  • Move to the exit lane well in advance
  • Don't slow down until you're on the ramp
  • Use the ramp to decelerate
