Why Parallel Parking Seems Hard
Parallel parking combines multiple skills—spatial awareness, mirror use, slow speed control, and steering. But with the right technique, anyone can master it.
The Step-by-Step Method
- Position: Pull alongside the front car, about 2-3 feet away, with your mirrors aligned.
- Reverse & Turn: Shift to reverse. When your rear bumper passes the front car's rear bumper, turn the wheel fully toward the curb.
- Watch the Mirror: Continue reversing until you see the rear car's headlight in your side mirror.
- Straighten: Turn the wheel back to center and continue reversing.
- Final Turn: When your front bumper clears the front car, turn the wheel fully away from the curb.
- Adjust: Pull forward to center yourself in the space.
Practice Tips
- Start with larger spaces and work smaller
- Use cones or markers before real cars
- Practice until it feels automatic
- Go slowly—speed comes with confidence
