California's Unique Requirements

California has some of the most comprehensive driver training requirements in the nation. Here's what makes the Golden State different.

For Teen Drivers (Under 18)

  • Minimum age for permit: 15½
  • Must complete driver's education (30 hours)
  • Must complete driver's training (6 hours behind-the-wheel)
  • 50 hours supervised practice (10 at night)
  • Must hold permit for 6 months

For Adult Drivers (18+)

  • No driver's education required
  • No behind-the-wheel training required
  • Practice strongly recommended

The Written Test

  • 46 questions, need 38 correct (83%)
  • Available in multiple languages
  • Can retake after 7 days if failed

The Driving Test

  • About 20 minutes long
  • Conducted on public roads
  • 15 errors or less to pass
