California's Unique Requirements
California has some of the most comprehensive driver training requirements in the nation. Here's what makes the Golden State different.
For Teen Drivers (Under 18)
- Minimum age for permit: 15½
- Must complete driver's education (30 hours)
- Must complete driver's training (6 hours behind-the-wheel)
- 50 hours supervised practice (10 at night)
- Must hold permit for 6 months
For Adult Drivers (18+)
- No driver's education required
- No behind-the-wheel training required
- Practice strongly recommended
The Written Test
- 46 questions, need 38 correct (83%)
- Available in multiple languages
- Can retake after 7 days if failed
The Driving Test
- About 20 minutes long
- Conducted on public roads
- 15 errors or less to pass
